However, that said, if you have a legitimate computer with some version of Vista on it you should have an "official" product key on the underside of your laptop or the back of your desktop.
If your friend put on the wrong version the key won't match up and Microsoft will get mad.
But if you call them via their hotline and do a little jig and dance they'll usually comply with your wishes for a new key. It's not like they're hurting for customers..
...monopolies with bad software can sometimes be useful.
