Ranking penalty?

Last couple of days my most popular hub gets hammered down the lists. For example, if you look at what's hot in "automotive" tag, you'll see my other hubs on the first page, and this one got pushed to the third page - while it always was on the first one...

It got some decrease in traffic recently (about 20-30%), but it still has way more traffic than my other hubs - by the order of 100. It looks like either it's a bug - and than I want that bug fixed, or a penalty - and than I want to know what I'm being penalized for, so I can fix it.

    Thanks.

It is getting worse... We are talking 10-15 page where it was the first page just a few days ago....

Do you know how the rankings are decided ?
My recent forex trading guide has a fairly high hubscore, but is way back in the pages on the relevant term search. There are hubs with a really low score showing well before it.  Is it traffic or hubscore? Or a combination of both?

Mark youre a 99 right now! Congrats. smile

Misha, how is the google ranking for those hubs? Has it been dropping too?

The hot list favors hubs that are high quality (measured similarly to HubScore) but:

    - have increasing traffic
    - were recently published
    - have recent comment activity

It isn't intended to be a static list of the top hubs based on traffic or quality, but rather a place a regular user can go to see what is, for lack of a better word, hot.  Generally, hubs should not stay at the top of the hot list for very long ...

Misha -- I think your hub dropped down the list mainly because of the decline in traffic.   We do realize that dropping a hubs internal position on HubPages because of a traffic decline may tend an amplifying effect on that decline.  But, in reality we haven't seen that to be a huge problem.  There are a lot of hubs getting steady and significant traffic that are pretty low in both the hubscore and the heat rankings.

Mark -- I see 3 of your hubs at the top of the forex hot list.  It can take a day or two (or until traffic starts to grow), for new hubs to hit the list.  Many of the factors that play into the hub and heat scores can't be measured instantly.

    Thanks for the explanation Paul,

So, this is just the way how hot hubs are computed... I thought your algo was - umm - not that complex smile At least we know now what factors are taken into consideration...

    Isa,

Most of my traffic comes from Yahoo, and yes, my main keyword position went from the second place to the fifth - hence the drop in traffic - currently about 50%...

    Mark,

Based on what Paul said, you might want to consider including comments capsule into your hubs - may be later, though, cause now you are doing pretty well smile

Ouch, yahoo seem to drop me from the index altogether sad

My squidoo lens and my main site are doing fine, however...

Isabella - Thanks - It's nice to be on top of you for a change big_smile

Paul - Thank you, I must have been looking in the wrong place.

Misha - Yes, you may be right. I started off with a comments box, but only got the kind of comments I didn't want - you know the type. So I removed it. I have left comments boxes on my smaller forex hubs, so I'll see how it goes. Although I had wondered about the hubs that have lots and lots of "doubtful" comments.  Now I understand why. Is leaving a comment on your own hub as bad as joining your own fan club. big_smile

You are such a bad man. wink

... and I was a 99 at the time as well.. so I guess you were in a different position. tongue

Mark -- comments are a pretty small factor in the heat ranking.  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  People that try to game the system may get away with things for a little while, but we notice what is happening and will adapt our algorithm to put a stop to the behaviors that we don't like.

What is interesting, in addition to the damage already done I got two thumbs down on that hub today (it had three thumbs down for its whole life), what does not help a better ranking either.

I don't think it is just a coincidence, some people love to hit those who are falling down winksad

Well, I just gave it a thumbs up, so perhaps that will help big_smile

Misha, have you broken a mirror recently? Because it seems you're going through a bout of bad luck.

No Apae, I did not. Luck comes and goes, the trick is to gain more than you lose smile

Misha, if you ever find a way to do that, you must tell me. Until then I hope everything starts to get better for you.
