Need advice on how to start my very first hub.

Not sure whether what I am doing is correct.  I am following the prompts that lead me to, apparently, eventually write my hub, but in the meantime, I have no understanding of what some of the terminology means like "capsules," for example.  I also do not know were to get a picture for my hub.  I am told that I have to have permission to use any picture.  How and were do I find these pictures?  I need a picture of the Greek statue Venus.  Thank you for your help.  I appreciate it.

First select a unique topic, and also try to know how much people interested in this topic, your content should be unique and should have quality and should be long enough because hubpages dont accept substantial content. All the Best.

In literal terms a "capsule" is simply a block, you start off with three default capsules of text, photo and comments and can add and remove others such as ebay, news, amazon, rss or others.

Finding photos for your hub would be very difficult usually but what I and others do is simply go to places like wikipedia and right click, save image to our computer and then upload them to the hubs in the photo capsule...or save them to somewhere online like flickr and photobucket and link to them. Don't do this if they are "paid" photos as that could be classed as stealing. (IMO)

The reason that you should not simply directly link a photo direct from a website is because the admins of those sites have to pay the bandwidth, it isnt really costly if one person does it, but extend that to a million views that are getting leeched on bandwidth you are paying for and it becomes a serious problem...on forums I moderate it is a serious offense to use content you do not have the right to use as in a worst case scenario it can lead to legal issues smile

    So to recap:

    Go to Google

    Type "venus de milo images/photo"

Right click and save to your computer

Upload them to the photo capsule smile

You'll find that the HubPages staff has set things up so even technologically naive people can learn very quickly.  You can save your work in an unpublished form until you are ready to publish it for the entire world to see.  Capsules are the blocks where different types of material are posted.  You type words in the text capsules; you upload pictures in the photo capsules, etc. Just start to work, and you'll find that it practically explains itself as you go along.

As for pictures... I'm so glad you asked!  One great source is Google Images.  Do an Advanced Image Search, and you can restrict the hits to images that are available for "commercial use" (that would be here on HubPages, if you are setting up here to make money).  On the Advanced Image Search form, look near the bottom for "Usage Rights" and select what applies to you.

Also, just today I learned that the CIA World Factbook (online very informative website - https://www.cia.gov/library/publication … d-factbook) has photos that are available, without copyright restrictions, for anyone to use.  I don't know how to do a search for a specific topic there, but the pics I have seen are all high quality.  It might be worth your time to check out the site. [PS - For some reason the full address of the CIA site is not showing up in this answer, but the link does appear to be correct.  It must have gotten shortened for some reason.]

    capsules:
you will see on the right hand side of the page a list of components like: text, photo, comments.

You need to click above on what else you want to add (like Amazon ads, more text, another photo, a video , etc)

As for picture, go to google and search (open another window)
and put in "pic of Venus statue"
see the results. Most pics you are allowed to use.

Hope that helps. Just play around a bit w/ the capsules....trial and error (well no error cause until you publish it--no one sees it)
