I don't know about the minimum number but I've read once, that you should write min.1000 words to have a good score
300 is a good minimum, i aim for over 500 these days.
good question , I was wondering the same thing.thanks for posting
I aim for 1500 (although I rarely reach it), but I think the minimum is 300. However, since I noticed that more words = more $$$, so I try as much as I can to reach 1500 words.
There is no minimum number required for poetry or photo galleries. There is one for the contest, but normally there isn't one. All other categories need at least 300 or are too short and run the risk of being flagged . There is no maximum word count. However, I would suggest if you are posting a long entry like a novel to publish each chapter as a separate hub. It is easier for your reader to read.
I've seen some Hubs with next to no words. I don't understand how they are supposed to provide a useful user experience with no few words. With the possible exception of poems or lyrics of course, and possibly video heavy hubs.

Janderson just submitted some great suggestions on this thread:http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/126313#post2666393and I think this one deserves a suggestion post on its own. We're always being told to be discriminating with our Amazon capsules - less is more, they must be directly related, etc...

I was hub hopping and had to flag a few hubs for being substandard (word count). One hub had exactly 10 words and 2 photos. There should be a way the system prevents you from publishing a hub like that except if it's in the poetry section.
