Will HubPages penalise people who add other hubbers without reason by reducing their Author Rating?
Just wondering because otherwise it seems like the "follow me I'll follow you" approach is the best one to get your hubs visible and get the Hub Feedback that you need.
Otherwise it would seem more worthy to improve your HubAuthor rating to something that is worth looking at in order to get followers out of quality content instead?
No one knows what determines the Hub Author Score (the little number on your profile picture), but I know that following a bunch of people at one time can lower that score. HubPages encourages people to follow others because they want to read their content--not because they assume the person will follow them because they followed.
Reciprocal following is great for social sites. Unfortunately, Hp is not a social site; it is a site for writers to publish magazine style articles and often to earn income by doing so.
If you want a ton of followers, join facebook. If you want followers on HP, write top quality hubs on interesting subjects and they will accumulate.
If you want feedback on a hub or two, ask for a critique in the "extreme makeover" forum.
Ahh I see and I know what you mean about the social sites. I've seen several hubbers who have about 20 hubs and 300 followers - clearly for feed spamming. 6 months and I'm shocked to find out about this "extreme makeover" forum! Thank you!
Nothing about hub scores maks any sense to me. In fact, it will probably be the reason that I leave Hubpages. I have written professionally for many years, yet I see my hubs posted initially with score in the 50s or 60s, the same as horrid little ungrammatical "poems" or truncated hubs in broken English.
I am aware that despite knowing how my own hubs are scored, I approach someone else's hubs tainted by their scores.
Similarly, someone with a "commentator" status (I don;t even know what that means.) left a comment about one of my hubs that simply did not make sense.
I know that the algorithm is allegedly proprietary, but I can't shake the suspicion that an arbitrary Wizard of Oz is playing with us.
Hub scores start at 40 when started, although they can fluctuate even before being published. After starting the hub they will then go up or down according to the algorithm. So yes, in the beginning they will all have the same score.
Obviously it's really frustrating when you don't know exactly how your own work is being critiqued - and indeed I've seen a number of 100 rated hubs with terrible grammar and spelling - but I think a large part of hub ratings is hubbers' feedback :S
If you follow too many people too quickly it will reduce your hubber score. It does not matter what your reasons for following were. If I happen to discover several hubbers I want to follow on a particular day, I follow them. It seems like if I follow more than maybe two, my score will drop a few points the following day. But then If I go a few days without following it creeps back up. The same goes for answering questions and commenting. If you spend all day doing it your score will go down. I have no insider knowledge of HubPages, this answer is based on my experience.
Ahh I was wondering about that too - how would HubPages know if it was interest-following or not; I suspect that leaving 'fan mail' alleviates the score going down - but I'm glad that you think the scores will bounce back to normal after a while. Tha
being a new hubber still learning the rules and regulations..and of course, a bit puzzeled too of the scoring pattern of the hubpages !

When I first joined Hubpages, I went, as I call it, click crazy. I was just following everyone I could in hopes they would follow me and read my hubs. Soon I realized that half of the people I followed weren't even...
