Doing new things vs. the risk of our existing reputation

I've strayed away from HVAC hubs here and there but would really like to start writing about a whole lot of things more often. My fear is risking the success/reputation I've developed with that topic. That it could get lost among new things or that it would change the way others see me as a professional which I believe has been key in my success with HVAC hubs. Should I start another account/identity? Maybe one for HVAC and one for "other stuff" or am I overthinking this?

Dr Mark gave you a good answer.
If you start a second account about HVAC, I think it could do very well. Most or many people have one and the system always needs some maintenance and attention.
Hubs that help readers solve a common problem usually are quite successful. If you have a lot of knowledge and experience in a certain area,I think it makes sense to make a separate account.

I think this was a lot more important for Google ranking back when we had subdomains. I deleted some hubs on Brazilian recipes and some others on epilepsy (human) because they did not fit, and have not tried to add any other odd hubs since that time. If you are concerned about the income, you do have to make payout on each account separately to receive payment on both. If you do not care, I do not think there is anything wrong with it. No matter what you decide the new articles are unlikely to affect traffic or page rank for your HVAC articles.
TimeTraveller2 just posted a forum about her second account recently getting up to 100.000 page views. When you open a second account you are starting out from scratch, so that is a great achievement.

I write on a variety of topics including gardening, physics, maths, tools, photography and electronics. Most of your readers probably arrive via an organic search on Google and never look at your profile, and even if they do, I doubt whether they would see you as less professional if you've "branched out". Well that's my personal opinion, so yes, I think you're probably overthinking it!

This is exactly what I would say.

Readers are mostly coming via search and hardly go to your profile. They may see related hubs that show on the article itself. But clicking author and then view profile is a bit too much work for most readers. Check your analytics and see if you have any views to your profile from organic sources. I doubt it's a lot, if any at all.

It might be a good idea though if there was an option to set a default filter for the articles listed on our profile pages. Currently it defaults to "All", and in your case a reader who happens to view your profile to see if there are any more HVAC articles worth reading, wouldn't necessarily want to be presented with all sorts of unrelated stuff.

Thanks to you all for your feedback. I did consider most folks don't read/visit my profile but guess I felt it would be HP or Google who would maybe see me as, for a lack of better words, "diluted" as opposed to readers but what's been said here makes sense. Much appreciated!

Since your articles go to the niche sites, they do not really have any association with your other work.
