I've been writing just over a year now and I have a few fairly successful articles. I get decent traffic, but nowhere near where I want to be. All of my hubs are featured and many are picked up by the network sites. I've got a pretty good rating and my hubs are pretty well thought out and detailed if I do say so myself. Are there any pro tips or outside the box ideas that could promote traffic? Perhaps take a look at my articles and give me specific advice? I primarily write about sports opinions and cooking articles. Thank you in advance!

First off, I do just what I'm going to tell you. Secondly, it's not something that leads to long term increases in traffic. At least I don't think it is.

Anyway, I can see you are a sports fan. Myself, I'm into baseball. Well, regardless of what one is into - and food being another thing I see, there are going to be hundreds of Facebook groups about those things. Sports groups and food groups are going to be all over the place. It is merely a matter of joining as many groups as you can stand to be in on Facebook.

Whenever I publish a new thing, after it gets featured I'll share it into as many relevant groups as I'm a part of. I do this somewhat out of boredom because I can't simply sit here and write constantly. I post a thing in 30 different groups and I may see a wave of 500 or more page views over the course of 3 days. After that it tapers off quickly.

A lot of folks will tell you this whole deal - promoting on Facebook, is a waste of time. Well, fine. I do it anyway.

Also follow sports and cooking pages. Pages being distinctly different from groups. You see a thread where your content is valid, heck, just bust a link in the comments. I do this same thing all the time too

Were I writing about food as you are, I'd promote those pages in the groups where people make fun of vegans on Facebook. I'm in groups like that. I get bored and make fun of vegans for hours at a time. It's just one of my glitches. There are all manner of other food groups as well. .

You're doing great, Jesse, right where you should be at one year and 18 articles. It takes time for Google (and searchers) to rank your articles high enough for your traffic to become high and steady. Give yourself time with a lot more articles and the traffic will come. You already have a good foundation.

Social media is okay but as Wesman says, it doesn't yield much. You need a ton of followers and good friends who will share and post links in order to see a surge every now and then. Old fashioned email and word-of-mouth can help, too. But the key really is time and patience. Good luck and happy hubbing.

Other than promoting my stuff on Facebook, I don't do much promotion or backlinking. Of course creating high quality content is the single best thing to do. I did think of one other thing to say here though.

Use Stumbleupon. I add every page I do to Stumbleupon. For the most part, the place provides me with only a few page views. Ever. But every once in a while I add one of my pages to Stumbleupon, and for reasons I'm unclear on, the page will wind up getting hundreds of views from that website.

So the fact that it sometimes does me good is enough for me to continue using it.

Wesman, I also answer questions on Quora, Yahoo Answers, and a few forums related to my specialty. Many of those answers will have links to my articles.
I am not sure how many readers I gain that way, but I do get some, as well as some backlinks. I dont think this would do much for generalists, but since you have a lot of special knowledge about guitars this is something that might help you.

Yeah. That's why I do Facebook for promotion. There are more groups about guitars and guitarists and music than one could ever imagine.  I've found a few groups with over a hundred thousand persons.

Also, groups are always being formed. Lots of older groups just fizzle out and die, but that isn't a big issue because someone is always making a new one, and so there you go.

I tried to figure out how to use Twitter for article promotion, but it doesn't seem to hold as much potential.

Independent online forums are great. I think I've been intimidated by some of those because I keep running into threads where I have to realize a significant portion of the participants seem to know more about things than I do. I do a lot of reading in such places.

I keep hearing about this Quora. I should check that out. Also, Stumbleupon just created something called Mix, where they want to migrate all of your stuff to. Suddenly I'm thinking in type. I need to check that out more too.

Pinterest is a good place to post food articles. I have hubs that have gotten views now for a couple years and others they just ignore. It is worth trying. Some of my hubs get most of their traffic from Pinterest.

Absolutely. What Barbara said. Pinterest is far more reliable for day to day traffic than Stumbleupon. Or Facebook.

I've got a ton of photos on the site. I'm getting 600 or so views per month from there. So it is nothing to sneeze at.
