What types of articles generate the most traffic (e.g. how-to, lists, diy,)?

What everybody else here said, but also, articles about topics that are of interest to many people.  For example, hobbies, home decorating and repairs, etc.

I think traffic varies a lot depending on the writer, so there are no hard and fast rules.
Based on my own experience, and what I have read in the forums, those articles that do not draw much traffic are fiction, personal articles (for example "Why Boo is the best dog ever"), most recipes, and those articles that start out with "Why I think ...", which are kind of personal. People read to find help for their own problems, not read about your opinion.

When you search for something on the internet, arent you usually looking for "how to" or "why" articles? Write answers based on what you know and the traffic will take care of itself.

It seems like how to articles get the most traffic and can earn a great deal especially if you find a use niche.  Good luck and welcome to Hubpages.

The important thing is that there is something of practical use in the article. People are usually searching for a solution to a problem, whether it be how to build or fix something, what movie to watch, a craft or cooking project, or a health problem. I think it helps to explain it in an entertaining way. If you are writing about a common problem, there is probably a lot of competition, so your article has to be better than the others. Less common problems will have fewer people looking for the answers to them, but you will probably have less competing articles.

Specialized how-to articles that are well-written. Something you feel comfortable writing about such as pool maintenance,  plant care, personal betterment, recipes, traveling, car maintenance, and so forth.

I feel if you write about a need it does best in traffic and earnings. The lager the audience your “need advice” applies to the better. I’ve written some how to’s on coaching little league baseball and they do fairly well however it caters to a smaller group of people interested in baseball for young boys. Small on a large scale anyways. Then I have the HVAC topic which appeals to any human being that wants to be warm or cool. The larger the need the better the topic.
