I had a reader ask a question on a recipe hub of mine, asking me how to make pea soup. Can I answer their question with a link to my pea soup recipe?

Hey Susan, long time no see. Yup, you can post links.

Hi good to see you again on here! I hope your battle is over and you are feeling better.
    Are your Newfies doing okay?
Brandon already answered your question, but yes I too use them a lot. Some of the questions I get have nothing to do with the article the reader has chosen so I send them the link to the appropriate hub. I think it is a great way to be helpful.

Still fighting, but feeling pretty good.
Sadly, Bruce left us 2 years ago. He had bone cancer.
Maggie passed this past spring. One day she was fine and the next day she couldn't use her back legs at all. The veterinarian said it was most likely degenerative myelopathy.  She was almost 12. I would love to have another dog but I'm not sure whether to rescue one or visit a breeder.
      Hope you're doing well.

Doing fine, thanks. I did not realize how long it has been. Sorry to hear about your dogs, and as I am sure you know 12 is a great age. (Although of course it is never enough!) I worry about my senior Pitbull every day, but of course hope she can be with me another 20 or 30 years!
I have a new Cane Corso Italiano puppy reserved from a breeder next year. Rescues are great but sometimes it is hard to find what you are looking for.
Glad to hear you are feeling okay. Keep on fighting!

Don't believe the myth that purebreds are never found in shelters.  At most shelters, you can put in your name, and tell them what you're looking for, and if one comes in, you will be notified.

Breed-specific rescue groups are another option to helping curb the over-breeding issue, and help put the unscrupulous breeders out of business.

If you do go to a breeder, ask to see their kennel license, and ask to tour their facility:  all of it!  If they hesitate, or offer excuses, run, don't walk, far away.

Of course, it is also not a good idea to adopt one of those dogs and assume that he has had any socialization. The main reason dogs are abandoned at shelters is that they have grown up, are not cute little puppies, and since they were never properly socialized are doing things like jumping up on their family, digging excessively, barking excessively, etc.
Many of the questions I get on my Cane Corso article start out "I adopted this dog at 6 months" or "we got him for the shelter at 8 months" and then go on to tell me how their dog is not biting and growling. Easy enough to deal with during a sensitive socilization period. Not so easy when the dog is over 100 pounds.

I've never thought of that. Good to know for when I finally get one. At least a few years from now.

I always try to recommend that new dog owners (especially people that work all day) find a senior to adopt from a shelter or rescue. Unfortunately, almost everyone wants a puppy, and they want to get one that does not really fit their lifestyle.

But I thought you just said that the older ones may not be trained well etc. Right now my flatmate has a golden retriever, but the dog is only here during the summer break as both of us go to Uni during the day.

I almost NEVER hear behavior complaints about seniors (over 7 years). Most people ask for help because their dog is having accidents in the house or some medical problem.
The big problem I see is people that want to adopt an older puppy. (The teenager of the dog world, from about 5-12 months.) The puppy may not have had any boundaries when younger and then all at once the new owners expect him to be trained. Can you imagine not starting school until you were 13?

Interesting, I would assume senior dogs in shelters would also have the same behavioural issues. Thanks for the info.

No school until I was 13. Nope can't imagine what that would be like.

Whenever I've gotten a pup from a breeder, I always see all of their dogs and the mom and dad whom I'll be getting my pup from. Both of my newfs came from reputable breeders. I've joined a few Newfoundland rescue sites on Facebook in hopes that I'll find one soon. I've never thought of letting breeders know that I'm looking for a rescue. I will definitely do that. Thanks!
