So we don't have the hassle of opening an image processing program every time to compress images and save etc.

I certainly wouldn't want HP compressing my images. They will never come out the way I like them. If you compress a large image too much it very often gets a bit blurry if it's a .jpg.

I use a paid plugin for post-upload image compression on my blog, and like you, I was initially worried the pics would end up pixelated. Turns out, there's barely any visual difference, if any at all, and the size saving is massive. The compression process, as far as I can see based on my experience as a graphic designer, is also superior to what you get in software like Photoshop.

Not really, it depends on the level of compression. You can compress an image down to one tenth of it's size with unnoticeable loss of detail. (well at least for a reader quickly scrolling through an article). If the photos are the main subject of the article, less compression can be used.
The top photo below is about 1MB on disk.
The bottom photo is about 100kB.
There is some loss of detail visible, but reducing 10 times is drastic.

Excellent free picture compression site. https://tinypng.com/ Just drag and drop, can also select percentage of compression if worried about quality reduction
