I have a couple of ‘recommendations’ on my pages that are assigned to a ‘Physical Intimicy category. Not planning to click on these any time soon as such a category apparently does not exist on Hubpages (that heavens). What is going on?

Physical Intimicy is a sub category on PairedLife which is one of HP's niche sites.

You can find several forum posts about this, but cross site recommendations as well as recommendations to Maven sites has been happening for some time. Staff is aware, and it does not appear they are too concerned.

I haven't noticed this. Although today I have a new follower of very dubious morals whom I am keen to offload, as I have no wish to take her up on her offer of saucy photos! What is happening to this site?

Hub Pages have got back to me. The person concerned has been deleted from Hub Pages. I am guessing, judging by the number she was following, that others have complained. I was impressed at their relatively quick reaction.

It is degrading, both to authors and to the site, and a severe slap in the face to readers who trustingly come to read interesting work. It's also a sign of desperation. Degrading desperation discourages decent contributors and dependable readers.

I noticed it and these articles are unrelated to the topics of my articles: Houseplants, 7 Superfood Powders, and so forth. It is so idiotic. It doesn't make sense.

From my understanding Sam said it was to drive up reader interaction, as well as bring in more traffic across the whole platform (all niche sites and Maven). I don't know why they thought this was a good idea though.

90% of my recommended articles are ones I have already looked at for one reason or another. Not sure why they would recommend something I already read. Doesn't make sense especially if one is trying to increase click throughs.

I have noticed some unrelated recommendations as well. I tend to ignore it but it somewhat odd sometimes.

For example on my video game related hub Alternatives to Steam one of the recommendations is How to Shave Men's Genitals (Illustrated)?!! Not sure how that relates to video games. Maybe an algorithm knows something I don't. This is on Maven.
