Is writing for Hubpages categorized as self-employment?

It depends... It could be taxed under earnings from hobbies.
I don't know if there is a dollar amount  that would separate hobby earnings from self-employment earnings. Anyone have a number?

Good info! I was not aware of the hobby tax classification. I started researching it. Discovered the one versus the other is a complicated mess; big surprise and what else is new; jeez, virtually everything is a complicated mess these days.

Fortunately for me, what with my amount earned and my tax bracket these days, doesn't really make any difference. big_smile As for the Form SE taxes I've been paying, I can live with it.

Yup! I know in the US HP will send you 1099 if you make 600 or more a year. Report your income and pay your taxes.

      They didn't send me one.
      Yeah, that 600 sounds familiar.

I made a Lot more -- and I did report and pay.

I didn't receive a 1099 from HP and I made more than that last year.  I reported and paid taxes on every cent I earned here.

HubPages does not send Tax Forms. The IRS requires that payments made via third party network transactions (e.g., PayPal) be reported on Form 1099-K by the payment settlement entity and are not subject to reporting on Form 1099-MISC. Since PayPal is the only mechanism by which HubPages Earnings Program payments are disbursed, HubPages does not mail 1099-MISC forms. As of 2015, PayPal issues 1099-K forms, but only for accounts with $20,000 and 200+ payments.
