I recently started reading a lot of poems by other Hubbers, I decided I needed to write my own poem too. I would appreciate some basic tips on how to structure a good poem.
    Thanks.

Al, I write mostly poetry, but there are so many styles of poetry including free verse that it is hard to give you a clear answer on how to structure a poem. it depends on what style appeals to you and draws you. The main thing is that it needs to flow and have some sense of rhythm, even if free style.

If you need a set structure to adhere to try a simple haiku ..three lines only and a structure of 5,7,5 syllables, or a sonnet but that is much more complex.

The most common rhyming poems have rhyme schemes AABB (last word on lines 1 and 2 rhyme and last words on 3 and 4) or ABAB. Most poems are written in quatrains i.e. four line stanzas.

Feel free to check my poetry or that of any other writers here whose poetry you are drawn to for ideas.

Thanks John, actually I was reading a lot of your poems, I really enjoyed reading your poem about Veteran Suicide, It inspired me to also think about writing one. I thought of sending you an email, but you are a very busy man in the threads. I decided to hear from other Hubbers too, to get a wider perspective.

Hi Al. Jodah gave you the best answer, he's a master poet. I don't have "tips" on writing poetry because for me, it's an organic activity that just happens. I will say, in my experience, if I take a feeling, an experience, or an observation and allow it to transfer into words, the poem will form itself. Check out the forum, "Hey Poets: 10 Word Tuesday." Have fun writing, let it flow. smile
