Today, while cleaning my mother's string bass, I came across two very interesting papers inside.

    1) A receipt (front and back)

    2) part of a journal or school notes (I ironed this as best I could)

I am inviting fellow writers to write a short story about these materials. You may include as much or as little of the information from them as you please; however, the story must include the mention of a "string bass" at least once.

As a reward for what I perceive to be the best story, I am offering my editorial services for one month or five articles, whichever comes first. You may accept or reject my offer, of course.

Have fun!  I look forward to reading the stories.

I am updating the receipt image for easier reading. There are eight (8) days remaining in this writing challenge.

This is a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline date I have set for this writing challenge.

I've only had one submission so far. I am writing a story myself, but it won't count in the offer to "edit 5 articles or for a month, whichever comes first."

Please post a message here that you've finished your story or contact me through the Contact Author on my Profile Page.

I probably won't write a story, but my mind is swimming with questions about the bass, your mom, and also that guitar I see in the picture. I love beautiful old instruments and stories about the musicians who played them. Hopefully you will be writing something!

I actually thought about researching in the local newspaper archives for the date, Eric. I have the name of the master sergeant too, and a potential date of someone's (handwriting is hard to read) wedding anniversary.

My mother was very musical; she had purchased the bass, but her first husband played it. Her main instrument was accordion. She had a strong alto voice, too, and could easily harmonize. The band at the time may have been playing at this officer's club when someone slipped the receipt into the bass while the band was on break. As far as the journal page--that actually kind of looks like my brother's handwriting. The notes could be construed, however, as a map plan for a vacation for the couple celebrating their anniversary.

I have some ideas, but I'm thinking maybe a young adult novel or novella (like other things in life, I seem to do best with activities that require quick, short effort).

I'll keep everyone posted on this challenge.

P.S. The guitar belonged to my dad; it's a Kay de Luxe. I just tuned and re-tuned it recently.

This so exciting and mysterious, Marie. I love the intrigue. You should see about researching it more. Also consider contacting Antiques Road Show for advice.
I'll consider writing a poem about it.

Thank you, Jan. I look forward to reading your poem; it won't qualify for the "short story" request though, unless it's an epic of over 700 words. Have fun!

Are we posting the photos in the articles?

Not necessary, Nate. You have my permission, however, to use them if you wish. Please put my name and HubPages Profile as the source and link if you do. I would appreciate that. I can see how you might want to use the string base itself. The string base, by the way, is also referred to as a "double bass." Thank you for the inquiry.  Also, I recommend the HubPages standard in word count (700-1250).

I wrote an article for your photo prompts, by the way. Thanks for the challenge!
