A $25 Contest - Real Deal

Here's a combined  reprint/modification/update as to how the winning number will be selected:

As mentioned earlier, Mr. Dow Jones will be picking the winner of this contest. Here’s the details:

The digit to the immediate left of the decimal point is our key number.

As an example: if the Dow closes at 26,123.45, then the winning number would be 3.
Another example: if the Dow closes at 26,678.90, then the winning number would be 8.

This digit placement selection should provide sufficient drama and intrigue from about a half-hour before the close and after trading has finished for the day. Even though the active trading is done, the Dow may still be receiving and calculating lagging data. We won’t know the actual winning number until sometime after the close. Someone is going to be having an elevated heartbeat for a little while.

    https://markets.businessinsider.com/ind … /dow_jones (right-click for separate tab)

The Index number we are interested in is at upper-left. Ignore the data below the graph. That is an entirely different mess with different parameters and differently derived data; it is irrelevant to the contest. For our purposes; that large, upper-left number above the graph is our sole lottery determinator. After all, all we are looking for is something that provides an impartial random number in an interesting way.

Market active trading hours are 6:30 am to 1:00 pm, HP time. Extended trading hours are irrelevant to this contest and do not count.

When I believe that any lagging calculations and updates to the Dow closing number are done, I will declare the winner. Good luck to all. smile

So it's a lucky draw? The winning writer is not being selected on merit?

    1. paradigmsearch profile image59
paradigmsearchposted 5 years agoin reply to this

The problem is who am I to say the other 9 entrants are not meritorious? So it was decided awhile back to just make this a simple lottery. HP has done that, so why not I? big_smile

The ticker page is indeed moving right along. However, I doubt I'll use them again; Google just gave me this message: "This ad uses too many resources for your device, so Chrome removed it." Meanwhile, less than an hour to close, winner to be determined probably soon after.

It's looking really good for the very first person who entered the contest, not final yet. big_smile

Update. No change. Looking really, really good. If no change by 3:00 pm, HP time and three other sites confirm; I'll be declaring the winner. In the unlikely event the Dow does an update after I have declared the winner, that update won't count. The randomness will have already been accomplished and the contest results already finalized.

If the final closing Dow does change before 3:00 pm, HP time; the new number is then the contending winner and and we will have to wait longer to see if there are yet more changes.

Hi!. Am glad you are here. I hope you will be the ultimate winner. Today of all days, the Dow decides to mess with us. The first 3 days this week it remained steady. Today it gets cute; amazing that the relevant digit survived. You've been major lucky twice so far.

Not final, but we have a highly probable.

Unbelievable! The closing Dow number actually did an update from lagging data/calculations an hour after the market had closed. But the winning number stayed the same! Because of the erratic, hour-late update; the contest decision is now postponed to 4:00 pm, HP time.

    5. paradigmsearch profile image59
      paradigmsearchposted 5 years ago

It's 1:30 am in the morning where the probable winner lives. So he's more than likely gone to bed. Meanwhile, something has come up in meat world, so am postponing decision until 5:00 pm, HP time. Gotta go for now. I hope the blasted index number doesn't change again. I'll be back before the 5:00 pm HP time.

Well, three different websites, including our "favorite" one, are saying the Dow close is 26,281.82. As far as I'm concerned, this is the cutoff point. Any further changes to the Dow are deemed irrelevant. So this contest is done. https://hubpages.com/@philipagutu with the lottery entry number of "1" is the winner.

The $25 is in my Paypal account! Thanks a lot, Paradigmsearch. cool  I wasn't expecting the contest prize but...in every contest, there is a winner and a prize. Participating in this contest was enough fun and a prize in itself to me. Still, I appreciate Paradigmsearch for being true to his word and being an example to future HP forum contests. Many thanks!
