Do you need organic traffic to keep an article featured?

I noticed one of my articles, though it used to get a lot of organic traffic, now gets more "direct" traffic. Made me curious if organic traffic is necessary to stay featured.

I've always wondered what "direct traffic" means. If it is from bookmarks, I suspect that is the highest compliment an article can get: well done. smile

My understanding is you can get direct traffic when someone clicks on a link to your article from HP or a niche site; from another article.

Actually, I brought the issue up months ago and lobobrandon believes it has to do with people not allowing cookies and going to your article from another one on the site.

Had to dig that one up, but finally found it. big_smile

Good job digging it up. It's not easy finding stuff on these forums because the search function is not the best.

I remember it the way DrMark says it. All you need is a hit every other month or so. I really do not know the time period, but my Hubpages SEO hubs are featured and I doubt they ever got organic traffic.

Your SEO hubs probably do get organic traffic. Take a look at the stats. My HubPages tutorials get traffic from Google.

I thought of doing that but was so sure that it would not be the case. I'm surprised! A lot of Google traffic and some Yahoo too among other search engines. Also some from upwork and ahrefs, etc.

I have plenty of featured articles that get very little organic traffic and have done for some time.

A few years ago I remember Paul saying that all it took was for an article to have a "heartbeat" on Google. He did not give any specific numbers, but I think he meant that as long as an article did not survive just on social media, it was okay to stay featured. (I could be wrong, because as we all know things change around here.)

Nathan, It could also be direct traffic from your articles being featured on the niche sites. Your stats will show where the direct traffic is coming from. For example, your COVID-19 hub is presently featured on the home page of PatientsLounge. And your Martial Arts hub is featured on HowTheyPlay's home page. Good going!

Nice to hear from all of you regarding direct traffic. I have checked my stats and found that most of my traffic is from google.com, bing.com, and android.google.com. Around 25% is from HP and only 1% from social media.
