Hi. I would like to write articles about celebrities and shows. Are there any sites you can get free legal photos on the net aside from Wikimedia commons?

Not that I know of. You usually have to pay for such images as they are syndicated.

Or, try asking for permission to use them. And then make sure you write in the caption 'XXX via whatever website. Used with permission.'

There are a lot of sites where you can get free to use images.

Do an image search on google search. Hit "Settings". In drop-down, click on "Advanced Search". Scroll down to "usage rights", hit for drop-down, choose "free to use or share, even commercially". Hit "Advanced Search". You will get a selection of images. Here's what I got for David Bowie.

This is very helpful, Nate, even for non-celebrity writers. Thank you for suggesting this method.

I have been emailing the sites when I want something not listed in as CC-BY. Usually, queries are accepted and appreciate a link to the article in which the image appears.

That is really cool, Nate. I knew you could search Google for CC images but I'd read that it can be unreliable, but those come up with the license info.

Arensshi, all you have to do is use Nate's link but edit out david+bowie and insert whoever you are searching for, with the + in place.

The problem is that many of those searches come back as creative commons but are not for commercial use. The best way to find images is to go to the site (for example flickr.com) and put in the celebrity you are searching for and then select "commercial use permitted". When you search those images with restricted copyrights will not show up, unlike with the Google search.
I realize I am being kind of sensitive about this but I do not want my work stolen and do not want to encourage the use of images that are not available for use on a commercial site like HP.

Yes, for Flickr, you can use http://compfight.com/ and specify commercial use.

I just looked at it and compared it to a search I did earlier today on Flickr. Is there any difference or advantage to that site?

I don't know, I used it for years, but not so much lately. I don't go directly to Flickr. Compfight just seems easy. Put search term in. When results show up, filter them by license.

Doesn't Flickr want you to log in?

No, they do not need a login. It seems like Compfight is a little faster, but I am not sure.
The only difference I saw was that compfight had fewer images, but mostly the doubles were taken out so it is probably the same. I was searching for a cute Brussels Griffon photo and both places returned images of Affenpinschers!
