      Eugene, Memorial Day is a public holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It is a day off, and most businesses and schools are closed.
      Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers killed in the American Civil War. It was influenced by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead.
      After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who were killed in any war or military action. It was originally known as Decoration Day smile
