When the Americans and allies pulled out of Afghanistan and turmoil reigned I thought I'd check my viewing figures on Analytics for that same country and discovered 1 lone person 'in touch' with one of my articles. Incredible to think of that individual pursuing their studies or wanting to learn despite the chaos. Yesterday I checked again - now there are 3 views. I'm flabbergasted.

Absolutely. I'd like to think it's someone defying the odds, taking what might be a huge risk. What price freedom?

Someone is viewing an article and I'd like to think they're studying poetry, transcending war, restrictions and oppression. I hope so.

Afghanistan's contemporary literature has its deep roots in rich heritage of both oral composition and traditionally written texts. The natives of Afghanistan either living within the country or outside use major languages, Pashto and Dari. ... Afghanistan's literature is historically recorded by poets and writers. ( Wikipedia)

"Afghan poetry is both subtle and profound, hinting at notions of spiritualism, and an Afghan sense of the transcendental,”

Thank you. Yes, poetry and the arts are vital - without them culture is starved and vision is lost. Afghanistan has suffered so much - yet the need for beauty and truth will never be lost , no matter the political regime in power.

I suppose some folks are just hunkered down; why go out unless you have to.  Like monks, they study in solitude.

I can see another person in some remote village, could be a young girl, close to mountainous terrain, dry and dusty, a few goats tethered, embers glowing, waiting for the thought police to arrive, cramming as much study as they can in the last minutes of freedom.
Or, there's a young buck with a smartphone searching for a poetic line to impress his new friend, distracted by an ad for the latest white Nike shoes. Then a rifle crack, more, as the thought police chase another rebel down.
That's some country - Afghanistan, it cannot be ruled over by those who do not understand the power of opium, the price of a life.
