As pointed out in a  recent thread, the way hubpages serves analytics code doesnt allow for the functionality of checking which keyword/ search string brings traffic to hubpages via the google image search.

From my own sites I know this functionality is possible with a  little extra code.

I use a plug-in so Im not 100% of the accuracy of this information, but it seems easy enough for non-wp sites

    http://seo-insights.blogspot.com/2009/1 … ds-in.html

Or maybe the functionality is there and I need to configure a filter?

So how about it hubs - serve that little extra code so we can glean our image search keywords?

Not sure how easy it would be considering that there are hundreds of thousands of images sitting on HP's server. Re-assigning them a numerical attribute seems to be the most efficient way of calling these images from the server.

Imagine for a moment that there are a 1000 hubs all with one image named "sexy girl," how do you call that image when they are all sitting on the same server? Which "sexy girl" image would show up? I think that it would only be feasible if we hosted our pictures elsewhere and that would be a pain for most people. Or, use some sort of url shortening or masking like which is done with tiny.url that redirects to the url of our images.

I think our best bet here on HP is to utilize the capsule heading and caption options.  I know that captions get attributed when doing an image search, not so sure on the capsule title for an image.

    In reverse,

when you upload pictures to hubpages they are renamed, right click an image and check it out. So there are '0' pictures on hubpages called "sexy girl"

For example your profile picture is called

    s1.hubimg.com/u/2321192_100.jpg

Analytics doesnt see google images as a search (weird!) so rather lists it as  a referral source and doesnt track the keywords

a small piece of java inserted sitewide just as the analytics code is set now will allow our personal GA acounts to read google images as a search engine

Im under the impression this is actually a very small edit.

Did you get that as my purpose for the thread, perhaps I should rephrase?

You have never wanted to know which images were bringing in traffic and why?

see, just a little code..i think, if this particular author is correct, have seen similar code on the google forums also

I use a plugin and other stattrackers for my personal sites so cant confirm

Cheers for highlighting this, I've always wondered why we couldn't do this, it's these little things that frustrate me, I would like to know what keyword terms get searched through the google image search.

Cheers back!, I was wondering if I was the only one who cared to have detailed stats!

Hopefully, some heads turn...the more we know so we can optimize for more traffic the better there 40% will look

I've been doing a little digging and from what I found out, GA doesn't consider images.google.com a search engine and therefore will not record any data related to keywords it will only trigger a hit as an entry point.

I think they can be tracked with server side js but even then I think it will only record the HP server IP.  I wouldn't be too concerned with where the searcher is searching from as much as what keyword they are searching for.

I may very well be missing some crucial aspect of this thread...

Since I have a few images in Google Image Search that kinda get a lot of hits from high rankings, on my own web site not HP's, I often check my image keyword stats.

By clicking: 'Top Content under 'Content' section, then the page/file name and finally 'Entrance Keywords' I can easily see all the keywords and I'm sure 90%+ relate to the images. By going back one page and clicking on 'Entrance Sources' I see a long list such as:
    images.google.com
    google.com
    yahoo
    google
    images.google.com.mx
    images.google.de
    google.com.mx
    images.google.co.uk
    images.google.es
    ....
It seems to me GA is counting images.google.com as a referral source and showing the associated keywords. Just not all on the same page. Am I missing something in this discussion? If so, sorry.

I suspect HP is using the GA API and there may be something they need to do within that code to enable this data to show up for us on HP possibly, if it doesn't already. I don't have any images from here that would show up in my short time here so I don't know.

Honestly though unless your #1 - #3 for a image keyword that gets searched for a lot its not going to amount to much. And if you do rank highly then you have the problem of image thieves and thats a real headache to deal with if the pictures are your own. More trouble than its worth from my experience. On your own web site make sure your blocking hotlinking or them MySpace kids will eat up your bandwidth quickly.

One final point I'd like to make. Since Images often don't last long on web sites Google used to wait 6 months, or even up to a year before they show your pics in Google Images. They want to make sure they will be there long term if they are going to index them.

      real quick.

Images index within the same time as any other indexable content in my experience.

the rest is exactly what is already stated in the original post and what livewithrichard said in his final post ..so I think maybe you are missing the crucial part

As a referral source you do not get entrance keywords, if in your case you can "guess" than that may work...but I continuously develop on long tails that are bringing in traffic and I create new sites/hubs when anything shows promise from my exact precise statistical data that I receive from GA, I dont have time for guesses.

@whitney... yes we all get plenty of searches from google images, its a great traffic source...but do you know what keywords are bringing you that traffic? No,

The request seems to be outside your needs...do you use analytics much to optimize your hubs and sites or develop new content based on proven search terms?

I agree with MyWebs. I get plenty of image searches from Google pulling keywords. I don't think there's a need to change anything bc we are getting hits from Google Images

Is there any new info on this?

It is killling me - lol
I have a hub that is bringing in view after view from Google Images. I've tried the keywords I used in the hub and none of them get my images.

This hub is only getting traffic from GI. I have given up trying to guess what is bringing up the images. The only captions I use in this hub are just goofy phrases- I didn't do any KW research at all when I wrote it. I want to go re-work it a little, if I could figure out which words people are searching for.

    This is reverse keyword research.

Can't we just have our images renamed sensibly based on hub url?
