Thanks, Peggy! Glad you found it informative. Hope you're doing well. Appreciate your support. Have a beautiful day!
Thank you for sharing this article, Peggy. Heidi has created yet another very informative and thought-provoking article for writers, especially poets. Her section about rhyming poetry was especially interesting. I often dislike poems when the writer shows evidence (at least for me) that they have been constrained by the need to create rhyme. On the other hand, some poems using rhyme (and some without rhyme) are excellent.
Linda, thanks for reading and chiming into the discussion! Indeed, some poets force-fit their work for rhyme, meter, whatever to the point where it's not even artful anymore. I always think that's a sign it's not finished. Anyway, I appreciate you adding your thoughts. Hope all is good with you. Have a lovely day!
This was very interesting and helpful, Heidi, especially the advice to compile all poetry of one theme together in a book, rather than a mish mash. I think that was the problem with my first attempt. The advice regarding a subtitle explaining exactly what the book was about was good.
I agree a lot of poetry these days seems to be just prose set out to look like poetry .. placed onto short lines or broken up into stanzas etc. For me, rhyming actually frees me up rather than constrains my poetry. I find it much easier to write in rhyme than prose or free form believe it or not. I rarely even have to think about it.
I do write poetry for Instagram occasionally, but probably not regularly enough to build a large following…and it is often just a few lines from a longer poem.
Thank you very much for sharing this, Peggy.
Happy New Year, Jodah! Indeed, I do think that curating poetry into some thematic or other logical connection is the way to go. It really can help define the audience, too.
There is a case for prose poetry. I'm reading a book about its structure and form from a literary standpoint. But, like you note and I've noticed in reading, some just appears to be visually sliced and diced to pass it off as poetry.
I do think that having a form to follow is rather freeing, though it doesn't seem it would be. It's like all other writing and creative endeavors, you have to know the rules to break them. And many writers and artists just don't want to learn the rules.
I don't know if we're following each other on Instagram. But if you want to follow, I'm @heidithorne.
Hope your New Year is off to a great start! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have a terrific day!
Great advice, Heidi. With so many poets here on HubPages this is must reading for anyone hoping to publish their work. And a thank you to Peggy for sharing this.
Hi Bill! Indeed, HP does have a lot of poets. I do hope they find some value in it. Selling poetry is a tough gig. Hope your New Year is off to a great start. Thanks for reading and your kind comments. Have a great day!

I have some poetry that I would like to submit in a hub, just wondered if I should copywrite it first? Does publishing it here constitute a "poor man's" copywrite? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.
