..a huge  surge of 8000 views on a modestly performing article.  Not complaining at all, but how do I find out why and where this is coming from? ("More, please.")

Congratulations! But as others has said here, and on other threads, expect a down side later. Good for you at both ends.

Click on the author view next to the article on your stats page. At the top, you'll see Stats. Click on the Referrers tab. That should be helpful, although I think they lag a bit.

Thank you. The site providing the most views is unfamiliar and  brings up an error message at this time. I’ll try later. The article also has a few thousand on the niche site which tends to feature trending hubs.  I appreciate your information. I’ve generally don’t pay much attention to the stats.

That is a Google owned website that promotes webpages that are modified to accept faster mobile traffic. I think it means that Google is promoting your page, which is great for traffic and earnings.  Congratulations again!
This is a qoute from HP when I asked about this new traffic: To oversimplify it, AMPs (Accelerated Mobile Pages) use a framework that allows them to load much more quickly. Here's a helpful article from SEMrush that goes into more detail! https://www.semrush.com/blog/amp-pages/

Thanks for that Dr. Mark. Much of this is too technical for me to grasp, but it looks like a good thing.Though the effects may not last for long I hope this happens to a lot of us. Getting thousands of views is very encouraging.

I agree with you in all that you said. I've read the link. It sounds all  Greek to me. Thanks.

I had the same experience a few weeks ago - one of my articles went from zero to several thousand views, seemingly out of nowhere. Turned out that Google had featured it on their mobile home page for a couple of days.

Enjoy the ride. It may not last long, but it'll be fun while it does!

Wow, that is wonderful! And we all want to read your article now as well.. perhaps we can stagger our reading so that you can have a nice bunch every day for a very long time! I find that when I make the effort to re-edit and update an old article that sometimes it is graduated to one of the specialty pages and I get a similar burst of stats-- but never 8,000!

By now it as reached   18,000  views but is quiclky declining... "only" a little over 2,000 today. (Grateful for the revenue boost.)
It was not  one of my  previously most-highly viewed hubs  and I don't think the subject matter is currently "hot", although I thought it conveyed an important message for some people.  It is on the "PetHelpful" niche and about wild animal pets. I'm not sure if  posting a link is appropriate., but it can be found.

There's no rocket that stays up forever. It comes down. But our articles are not rockets. They're like water finding an appropriate level.

How true that is. Nice! One may say it is entropy at work playing with equilibrium.
