Adding Backend Pinterest images for more traffic

Hi! Is there a way to make it possible to add Pinterest sized images to the backend of our articles? I know they take up too much space within the article itself, but it would be nice to add one somewhere to get more traffic. Pinterest prefers images that are at least a 2:3 proportion, and gives 1000 x 1500 pixels as an example.

In the backend of my personal blog  (WordPress) I'm able to add a hidden Pinterest-sized image (or several), which then can be shared to Pinterest. It doesn't affect speed or SEO in any way.

I get quite a lot of traffic to my site from Pinterest. I would love to get that kind of traffic here as well. I do create Pinterest friendly images and then manually add my link on Pinterest to my HP articles, but it's so time consuming.

    Thoughts?

This is what HubPages said yesterday in another thread (Eric's "Image Best Practices"):

"Pinterest still prefers portrait-style images, but including that type of image at the top of an article pushes the text completely below the fold on mobile. We highly recommend retaining Pinterest-style images in your articles but placing them further down the page so that readers get to the text (and the answer to their question!) more quickly."

It sounds to me like they're recommending what you say, Marissa. In essence, using some Pinterest-friendly images but doing it towards the end of the article.

Yes, I did see that they said that.

I feel like that assumes a reader would get to the end of the article to see that pin image, but oftentimes reader will pin an article to one of their boards to go back to read later. The first image that shows up is usually the one that is pinned, unless they code it differently.

While we writers might understand that we need to use the hovering Pinterest icon over our Pinterest-friendly image to share it properly, readers may not understand that.

I find it difficult to know what gets pinned and what doesn't from the analytical info I have.

It would be useful if HP could direct us to an example article of what they mean.

I think i know what they mean. When I first started writing here, I used portrait-sized images as my cover. When I visit these articles (as a reader) the first thing that I will see on the screen is the title and the cover image and since it's in a portrait size it will take a few more scrolls (mobile phone or desktop) to see the start of the article.

Considering this, you may imagine that it's not a conductive situation. Personally, if I'm the reader, I will get bored at that layout and exit the article. Aside from it didn't looked legit to me, it takes a lot of time to reach the answer I am looking for.

The longer the image in height, the longer the time the reader will have to wait to reach the purpose for reading that article.

I hope what I described gave you the mental image. I cannot attach a photo because I already changed all the covers of my articles already.
