I am doing a TOP 5 Videos Hub where the lyrical content is tied to my point.
If I cut and paste the lyrics of a song in full, will it be flagged as plagiarism?
I am simply posting the 5 vids and 5 full lyric. Is this okay?
If you claim to have written lyrics that were really written by someone else, that's plagiarism.
If you repost lyrics that are also found on other pages on the web, the Hub will incur a duplicate content penalty. No way around that one.
We penalize duplicate content whether it is plagiarized or not. Copyright violations are another matter, they are handled through this process. Despite the vast number of sites that offer lyrics online, publishing more than a short quote from lyrics that someone else wrote (without permission) typically means you are violating someone's copyright. You may want to reread #3 "Permitted Uses" of the HubPages terms of service before you proceed.
I hate to contradict you, Paul, but that's not exactly true. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so many lyric sites. You can publish the lyrics, as long as you give credit to the songwriter. Publishing the lyrics with the MUSIC is copyright infringement. The lyrics actually would have to be copyrighted separately as a poem. Most songwriters don't do that, because no one ever wants to steal exact lyrics without the music. Or at least that's what I was told by an attorney.
That's why karaoke lyrics will sometimes have some words wrong on the screen, to get around the copyright laws. It has to be a certain percentage of the exact lyrics to be copyright infringement. I think they've plugged this loophole, though.
And if you really penalized people with lyrics in their hubs, my "Child of the 60's..." hub wouldn't have gotten nearly as much traffic as it did. Guess you penalize it by not giving it revenue? If so, that's illegal as well, so if that's what you're doing, don't get caught. Allowing copyright infringement is copyright infringement in and of itself, so you have no legal right to punish the original poster if you allow it to stay on your site.
It's kinda like when someone is dealing drugs out of your house. If you know of it, and do nothing to stop it, the DEA can legally take your house.
The mere existence of many lyrics sites doesn't prove that they are legal. I recall some of the bigger ones getting shutdown in 1999 or 2000. Yahoo recently launched the first licensed lyric site.
Are you likely to be noticed by the rights holders for a having a couple of hubs with lyrics in them? Probably not. I suppose you could argue that lyrics are still in a legal gray area, but it isn't the kind of fight I would want to have to make. You are responsible for the content in your hub.
Lots of good resources on the subject can be located with this search:

Here is the U.S. Government's take on it:

f your hub has been certified as original by the administrator it will appear at the top of the hub. Once certified as original no HubScore penalty will be applied.
What certification? Where?
Mr. Deeds don't go to town on me but even after reading all your links i still don't think it's entirely clear as to whether you can even post music videos. Is seems to say that you can only post things that you own AND have already copyrighted as your own.
If you get certified as original, it will be apparent only to you, the hub owner. It will be a very obvious red statement which appears at the top of your Hub, right under the editing and stats buttons.
One of my hubs came up as duplicate...it was the one that quotes from an RFK speech. I was able to appeal that, the message tells you how.
A lot of the YouTube videos are violations, that's why they disappear once in a while. As long as you don't make it a business I don't think linking to a few will get you in deep water. It's the same with all the photographs which some people make it their entire hub career to post. I try only to feature copyright free photographs on my hubs but I have used pictures of celebrities I have found on the web. I am trying to use only original and copyright free photographs in my hubs though.
I guess Mr. Deeds and I posted at the same time
The expert from Billboard magazine is saying that the big lyric sites are the ones that are being pushed to do business legally now that there is a precedent set with a legal lyric website. It's like when they made napster go legal.
The problem is that the publishers who own the rights and have been ripped off by these sites even existing are not willing to come to the table with these sites to negotiate a mutually beneficial deal.
Reason: If someone was robbing you, would cut a deal to split the profits with them?
The idea of them coming to hubpages to bust THE ONLY hub I have ever or will ever use with complete lyrics seems a bit rediculous.
I have come up with a solution that will hopefully placate all.
I am going to post it as is for my daily 28 hour contest, then after everyone has voted and the polls close I will fragmentize all the songs to just the parts I feel are most relevant.
If you're embedding videos from YouTube in your hub, I believe they bear (at least most of) the responsibility for that content. Technically they are hosting the video on their servers, even though it appears in your hub. If you publish very many hubs with videos in them, you'll notice that over time some of them may disappear. Often that is because Google yanked them because of a DMCA request.
What I was talking about in previous posts was cutting and pasting lyrics, and my understanding of the law regarding that. Remember though, I am not a lawyer (and I'm definitely not your lawyer). You bear the ultimate responsibility for all the content of your hubs.
oh rats cj..I am so into this contest..and now you may not be able to continue..not fair. G-Ma ) hugs
I'm gonna publish both HUBs right now G-Ma!
The HUB in question is about 9/11 in case you've been wondering.

If any content of the hub is being copied by someone and used elsewhere, its not the fault of hubber. This is nice that HP is motivating hubbers to file DMCA to the concerned site and take appropriate action, who is going to waste time to fight with the copyright violators. HP has witnessed...

About once a week I peruse my hubs to check on traffic, comments, and just generally see how things are going. One of my hubs, "What Are The Benefits of Eating Bananas," had the copyright symbol next to it. I know from past experience that this means hubpages has found my content...

I'm planning a hub about one particular actor in one particular scene of a movie. Without a visual representation of the actor in the scene the article would be meaningless, but no free or non-copyrighted photos appear to exist. To me this seems a classic case for Fair Use, as reflected in this...
