Why do people use 101 in educational courses? (Eg. Psychology 101). I've also seen 202 and 303.
I get that 101 is a beginner's class, but why? And where does this numbering come from. Why not say Psychology 1, and then Psychology 2 etc..? I think it's an American thing, but I've never understood it.
101 or 111 is the first year course. 201 or 211 is second year courses and 301 or 311 is third year course and so on and so forth until you reach the 8000 which I have actually done.
Thanks for your answer. Is 111 a more advanced course than 101, that you can take in the first year? That kind of makes sense, but still sounds a bit strange. I think 1.1, or 2.1 makes more sense. ..But maybe that's just me!
the reason not just 1, 2, 3 is there are hundreds of course subjects. I actually majored in Psychology, so since you used this subject as an example... 101 and 102 are introductory courses dividing an introductory textbook in half. These courses are for the layperson who doesn't know much about the subject. then 201, 202, 203 is the numbering for the next level. These courses focus on a specific aspect of psychology such as statistics, psychological disorders, cognitive psychology etc. and there are dozens of them. Then these are studied in depth at the upper level of 300 and 400 courses.
101 is usually the lowest level of a given course type-there are 202 303 415's but they are tougher courses
the 101 metaphor is typically used to represent an easy level/degree of study.

I'm not a big fan of getting into controversial discussions in the forums. I prefer to read than write here, but this has been bothering me for a long time. There are some deep questions that I want to ask. When I talk to Jewish Rabbis or thinkers they would engage me forever, keep the coffee...
