What is this 'God Particle' actually?
It is in the news everywhere. And they say that scientists are on the verge of finding it. Why is it called the God particle and what is so 'godly' about it?
The "God" Particle is the Higgs Boson. A sub atomic particle recently released at the CERN collider in Switzerland. The particle was named about 50 years ago as the Boson, Though it was named in the early 1960's it was merely theoretical until the recent CERN experiments found a particle which acted in the theoretical parameters of the Boson. the name God Particle is a creation of the mass media.
The particle itself is one of a group of sub atomic particles which combine to make up all matter and forces in the universe. As this particle is a basic source of gravity it holds many other particle together this means it is essential for all forms of matter. Calling it the boson is just not spectacular enough for the media, the media then created the name God particle. As such other than being a requirement of creation the boson is neither God like nor does it prove or disprove the existance of any God.
Aha! Thank you for that concise and informative reply. It sparks another question in me though - how does it become a requirement for creation?
The Boson is at the heart of gravitation. These particles cause the stars, planets and everything to exist in the physical state. Without the Boson there is nothing in theory.
Thank you Bretsuki. That answer and a little extra reading made it a bit more clear for me too - about the field and how the boson lends mass! Thank you

What exactly is the Higgs boson and how does it work?Yesterday, in Geneva, Switzerand, at a CERN conference, a world-wide physicists organization announced the discovery of the Higgs boson. Can someone explain what this is in layman terms and why it is so significant to the world of physics?

How would the confirmation of the Higgs boson sub-atomic particle change our world?Other than just confirming a theory, when the Higgs boson sub-atomic particle is discovered, if it exists, how is that going to affect new innovation? Will it lead to new advances in health or technology, including...

When the mainstream media labeled or nicknamed the Higgs boson, "God particle" scientists where aghast. Peter Higgs himself (one of the 6 physicists who in 1964 proposed the mechanism that suggested the existence of such a particle) said that labeling the Higgs boson the "God...

Higgs Boson invention - Boon or a Curse? The CERN scientists are really really close to find the HIGGS BOSON - the "GOD'S" particle . I do really hope they reach the end of this quest as soon as possible .But I was thinking , does this invention really mean , they have finally found GOD?Is...

Do you think CERN will find the Higgs Boson?I sometimes wonder if sub-atomic black holes might explain a lot. Maybe they emit higgs bosons... or at least virtual particles. I don't know. Here's a link about the so-called "God Particle":...
