It can be a science or writing project, or anything that can make a 10 year boy learn by involving himself in the project.

We painted a plastic stained-glass like piece. I don't think he really learned anything, but it was fun to work on together.

I worked with a 12-year-old boy by trading help with his math homework (which he didn't want) for sparring sessions in karate (which he did want). He learned in both, and learned that math can be fun, even if not as much fun as karate. (It's not quite a project, but it worked!)

We had to recycle something from around the house and make it something useful.  We made a big pen/paper/accessories caddy from the styrofoam of a laptop computer. We painted the styrofoam and put pictures on it and it turned out great. All his teachers wanted one.

A fun one to do is make a LED flash-light out of a tic tac container. All parts can be easily obtained at your local electronic component store.

It is a good learning experience in basic soldering and electronics.

You can pick the light colour and is fun to show off to your school friends and family.

We've created our own games, board games, electronic games (to learn the basics of electricity) and computer games (to learn basic programming in the Python language). The greatest thing is that the child's imagination is the only limit. You can take any idea of theirs and make it work in one fashion or another. Board games might be easiest to start, make your own board, rules, player pieces, etc.

Another fun one is to build and launch rockets.
