There are eight classical planets. Pluto has now been classified as adwarf planet along with Ceres, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. A dwarf planet is a minor planet with enough mass to pull itself into a roughly spherical shape. There are also 73 dwarf planet candidates that may be listed as dwarf planets in the future if further observation shows that they fit this definition.
I agree with the IAU's determination of Pluto as a dwarf planet. I don't see it s a demotion, just a more accurate reclassification. Instead of being a strange outlier among the big planets, it is king of a new class of objects that astronomers are only beginning to understand.
