Biology, basically. We're a visual species. Other species like dogs have better senses of hearing and smell. The primary way humans understand the world is through sight. It's also a major way we communicate, while other animals communicate via smells more. Most fear comes from a primal reaction. Early humans would have feared darkness because it was when they usually slept, but when some nocturnal animals were active, some of which might have been quite dangerous. Imagine a world without any houses or much shelter of any kind at night, and if there were rudimentary huts, animals could still get into and be heard from them at night. What we fear most is something that doesn't exist now but could have in the past, something powerful enough to prey on humans, so most horror will have that element and it will use darkness as a cover because mostly, our weakness is our reliance on sight.
It cannot be otherwise, as we are all Gods! That is to say, that we are made in the image of Spirit, that Spirit dwells in us, and that we are not our own.
One of the worst things is to have a toxic friend or be a toxic friend. We may not say anything to toxic people, but 6 months; a year later, we've had enough and will ask them to move on. Actually, they weaken us, and we begin to feel insecure.
The Soul is in Isolation from God and is on a Sojourn to find its way HOME. Anything which makes it strong is useful, and anything that makes it weak it abhors. Expansion is life, vastness; narrowness is death, and the Soul knows this.
Actually, this is a problem in our Christianity, as we love Light and hate suffering, the very thing that we sometimes need to facilitate our inward and onward journey. Hope this helps. Much Love.
Seems you speak of Dakness, Grace, as in the night. I approached it from the standpoint of Ignorance. Actually, funny enough, we are afraid of the dark for the same reasons: Fear, insecurity ...facing the unknown. We wish to stay alive. Peace.
I think it is because darkness means the end of the day, For me it means I have to start getting ready for work because I work the night shift. The only thing I don't like about darkness is driving in it since this is when the deer like to come out and play on the roads.
Of course nothing beats The Music of the Night
Darkness, as in the night, or not long after the sun goes down is my favorite time of the day. Especially tonight with the lunar eclipse and all.
We associate the darkness with many horrible things, such as death or a monster hiding in our closet that we can't see. However the real answer is that we as humans use our sight to observe everything, therefore when our sight is obscured we lose our sense of reality in a way and panic. I speak from experience as I suffered from Insomnia for quite a few years and was constantly scared of the dark.

I hate one song so much I have to honor it with a mention. I don't know who "sings/raps" it, but it goes, "New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits... Chinese food makes me sick.."What song makes you sick?
