    how do i figure out what kind of spiders are in my basement?

    they're black or brown and hairy.

    Or if you can get a picture or specimen you can send to your local university with a horticulture department or a large garden center.  Some newspapers have columnists to answers these types of questions also.

    Spiders are usually grouped based on the region of the country. I have black widows here. But these aren't found in other parts of the U.S. Also, where spiders nest is relevant. If the spiders you have are found in a basement, that information will help pinpoint what you have. Then you can do an online search. For example, "Basement spiders in Topeka Kansas" should quickly find what you're looking for.
