Universities are so-called because they are supposed to offer universal knowledge. Universities must find a way to immerse students in the larger world beyond their walls — social, cultural, arts, business, philosophical, economic, global as well as day-to-day practical.
I agree with rickzimmerman and would also say its when many first start to really learn how to be an adult... or at least they should do!
