The resistance of stranded wire is higher than solid because the cross section of a stranded is not all copper.  While electrons travel on the outside of the wire, the stranded wire is part air and acts as a single unit.  The effect becomes higher as frequencies increase.

For the most part, you will see both solid and stranded being used to wire residences and commercial properties.  For the most part stranded is used due to its flexibility, and solid is cheaper to produce and that dictates its uses in non high frequency or long transmission applications.
