Arithmetic is important in maths since it is the only math theory you have to use in day to day life. Although you may argue that all things can be done by calculators these days there is always a time were it is simpler to make an addition in your head than use a calculator or your mobile phone to calculate the results
Math is important to learn for several reasons, depending on what we mean by math. Arithmetic helps us do things such as make change or balance a checkbook. Numeracy lets us have a sense when numbers are wrong. And math itself is one of the most glorious creations of the human mind--a vast playground for creative thought and the pursuit of beauty.
