    Wow - Great question!  I just found this link on the internet for you.  It looks like an educational site for K-12 grades with some really good info. on it.     In this area, a popular project has been painting warnings (complete with fish logos) on storm drains to alert people that anything poured down those drains will end up in the local creeks right away.

    If your child has access to test tubes and burners, have them do a water dissimulation test and see if they can identify the different contaminates.
