The ability to solve a problem that you haven't encountered before and for which there is no 'how to' manual to which you can turn.

Being capable of original thought and rejecting 'received wisdom'.

Thomas Paine said it best, 'I don't quote - I think.' (To quote Thomas Paine - I know!) Something we all should try, at least once in a while.

Mere knowledge - which can be very useful - is not a measure of how clever someone is. It only demonstrates that they have a good memory.

    Intelligence cannot be taught.

Intelligence is bestowed on the few of us who have the ability to read and interrupt meaning out of everything we do, see, hear, or think. For one to be intelligent they must analyze everything because they are looking for a deeper meaning behind the mer actions people do or words that are written or said. They ask and keep asking digging deeper for not only mer knowledge but for the ability to understand the things that happen around and too them.

I like all answers, for all are correct. I ask for ones definition of intelligence because the definition often reflects intelligence.

In my opinion intelligence is the ability to assimilate, interpret and maintain information. Intelligence is not to be confused with education, nor can it be accurately measured by an IQ test. I know this from personal experience. I grew up Amish and had only limited formal education, after leaving the community I took an IQ test out of curiosity - I scored 120 which was lower than I was happy with so I spent a few weeks studying IQ test taking strategies-  took another IQ test and my results were "off the bellcurve" which tells me that an IQ test accurately represents ones education but not ones intelligence.

I think many people mistake Intelligence with Intellect. The latter is our capacity to acquire knowledge from books, universities or lecturers and our processing these information in a logical and coherent manner.
Intelligence is what is intrinsic in all living creatures , be it human or animals. It is the capacity to grow and to survive.
