Why is Van Gogh  considered one of the greats?

I personally feel he was genius and showed that in his work.

In my opinion Van Gogh was one of the greatest.

I love the impressionist painters, but correct me if I am wrong but Van Gogh went a stage further, he was expressionist.

My favourites are 'The Church in Auvers' and 'The Starry Night' .

Because he created a new way of painting even though he had social and mental issues. Especially with his brother.

The choice of subjects done in the fashion as he interpeted...his passion...his approach to the Art..bold choices of colours..and the bizarre from the state of his mind, without refecting the opinions of others...as have  ALL the greats stepped outside the box and set precedidence for future artists.

I agree that his painting style was very expressive...very passionate...very empathic...and his very spirit seems to pulse in the paints, even today.

His art crossed the bridge between Impressionism to Modern...his work is timeless because he put his whole self into all of his art.
