The theory is that a when a photon, essentially a little package of light that behaves as both a particle and a wave, interacts with an object (most likely a crystal) and splits into two photons. The two photons divide their energy, thus having a lower individual frequencies, but longer wavelengths than the original photon. When a photon splits into two photons, the pair is considered "entangled."
