What do all the parents out there think of the high stakes testing in our schools today?
Just about every school all over the United States has some kind of standardized test for their students to take, what do you think about them? Are you for them? Are you against them? Do you think they give us real data or what?
In our elementary school, they literally go nuts over the test. It's like our kids are walking test scores instead of human beings. They went so far as to send notes home with students reminding the parents to feed our kids breakfast and make sure they sleep. The test is everything. I think some testing is good -- but our schools have gone way overboard.
I think it's too much in our area. They spend a whole week filling in bubbles, instead of learning.
Daniel, I totally agree with you. Our school is exactly the same, but all the pressure is sent from the top. We have been told that if our students don't perform we are out of jobs. It is crazy, because I get an hour and half with my students each day. I don't get to go home with them and make sure they read, do their homework, get fed, go to bed, or anything like that. You are at the mercy of the students that you are dealt.

How do YOU feel about standardized testing? My main interest is how many parents use the test scores to determine school placement for their child (and how they achieve that placement), but feel free to talk about any aspect of standardized testing.

Do standardized tests determine who will be successful? As a former music teacher I noticed that a week or two before standardized tests all classes/recess were cancelled to cram test ?'s and answers to the test. Does this really prove what kids have learned or how successful they will be in life?

Teachers often complain about low pay; the claim to be overworked and under-compensated. The say that they deserve to be paid more, since they are responsible for teaching the next generation. Yet, when the subject of the ever falling standards and performance of students comes up, they rarely have...

I was just wondering if anyone else thought that standardized testing in grades K-12 is a good indicator of if a child is smart or not?
