    Should teachers accept late work?

Are there any studies on the value of late work?

In my opinion, They should accept it but take off a percentage of the grade because it is late. People need to learn in life there are consequences for being late. If not, They will take advantage of everyone's time.

I think there should be clearly defined boundaries between the students and the teacher at the time when the work is set. The due date is.... Any work submitted after .... and before.... will receive at the most a maximum of (for example 60%). Any work submitted after.... will not be accepted, and will receive a grade of 0%.

I never accept late work. For me, late work is a slippery slope, if it's accepted 5 minutes late, then is 1 hour ok? What about 2 hours? What about 1 day  because of a "broken printer"?
This policy is one to which I adhere because I believe it prepares students for life in the real world. When I worked as a technical writer, I was not allowed to submit late work, regardless of the reason (valid or not). There was no "partial credit."
Though I was initially branded "strict"--students have really come to respect me and my policy.

It's better that the student do the work eventually than not at all.  By accepting late work--albeit with a reduced grade--teachers can at least partially motivate their students to get work done at some point.

My college professors accepted late work. However, they took off points for every day that it was late. It only took about 4 or 5 days to make it a failing grade.
