Have libraries always been noisy?
I live in a small town, and I occasionally go to library to write. Every time I go, librarians are laughing and talking at the top of their lungs, people are on cell phones, conversations are in process in every corner of the library.
Am I wrong, or didn't the library used to be a quiet place where you go told to be quiet if you were being too loud?
Am I the only one who believes that libraries are for studying and reading, not socializing?
The Library was my " haven" where I studied as a young girl, up into my Medical School days.. people also followed the rules of society...but then again..society has changed..it seems to be an " I/ME" thing..consideration for others seems a thing of the past..manners, empathy and apathy appear to have gone out the window...The Librarians today are almost afraid to enforce the rules due to repercussions and they are a product of society that is sad..it seems no one enforces good behavior these days...great question, glad you asked.....
Excellent answer! I absolutely notice that consideration has gone out the window. Everyone seems stuck in their own bubbles - not aware of anyone else.
Thank you for choosing my answer...it was a great ?
This is one of my bugbears, too. Libraries were perhaps a little over zealous at one time, enforcing the " silence" rule. But these days, gosh, our library is like a community centre. A playgroup comes in to socialise and sing songs. The photocopier churns out paper. People chat loudly and phones ring. Others discuss what's on the internet. I know we have to move with the times, but there are days I walk in the library and walk straight out again, looking for a book seems too much like hard work.
No. The libraries I remember where quiet, respectful, and a wonderful place that I enjoyed.
