What is the best advice you were given before starting college?  Any advice you wish you were given?

Go to a community college and get your Associates. Without going to a community college, I would have wasted so much time and money after realizing that the major I had chosen didn't fit me. By taking classes at one third of the price, I pieced together who I am and what I wanted to do in life.

This is great advice! I didn't take the commnity college route, but every time I send in payment on my student loan I wish I had!

Iburmaster gave a good tip. In the one short period when I had any inclination to attend college, to study psychology, I asked my dad for help with tuition. He had grown up in a poor family and put himself through college by his own efforts, to a doctorate degree and became a professor. He offered no financial help and I had not sufficient motivation to do it on my own. Looking back to that time almost 40 years ago, I can see my life would be different if I had graduated from college. I cannot imagine my life would be any richer, fuller or better. More likely I would have been stuck in head knowledge and not had the wonderful experiences of beling alive. So I would say, the best advice will come from within. And I suggest asking, 'Is college really what my true self guides me into?'

I was not given any advice at all before I went to college.  I dropped out my first go around.  I wish someone told me that I would get home sick but push through it another semester and you will be okay.  Give yourself time to make friends.  Get involved with campus activities.  When you feel like giving up remember what your main objective is and how it will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Yes those are definitely much needed tips any student can use.  The first semester can be so challenging especially for students who went away.
