Is it acceptable that rhino are being hunted to extinction to feed medicinal purposes in Asia?
Rhino are hunted in Southern Africa and India for their horns. In the far east, local practices attribute medicinal properties to rhino horn - unproven in any western medicine.
The net result is that rhino horns are cruelly chopped off living animals, resulting in their gradual and painful death.
Is this practise acceptable, and will the extinction of rhino be an acceptable price to pay, for historic medical purposes?
Many wild animals are poached by hunters desperate to get ready cash for body parts. These are sold to 'medical establishments' - for distribution to poor gullible people. It's a rotten industry based on folklore and folk medicine, most of which is a load of bunkum.
Tigers are killed every year in India and Nepal - an obscene act which shouldn't be happening in the year 2012 - and the rhino as you highlight is also slaughtered unnecessarily. It could be stopped if governments put more money into security for these animals and cracked down on unproven medical practices long out of date.
Thanks Chef. It is disgusting.
Some in South Africa suggest poisoning the rhino horn (not the animal, just the horn) so that the end users of the folk medicine get ill etc.
Food for thought, isn't it?
It is no more acceptable than it is to do the same to humans; and they do kill humans for the same reason (organ tansplants), especially children. Another reason why mankind is not worthy of walking the earth.
Wow! Please send me more info on the organ transplant story - I am as fascinated as I am disappointed in the human race, at times.
