Bad teachers: Are teachers causing children to have low self esteem?
Many teachers use bullying, sarcasm, time out, embarrassment, praise to bring one child up and put others down and intimidation to get the desired behaviours from children. But what is this doing to childrens emotional development?
Yes, the way a teacher behaves towards his/her students does provoke bullying. In essence a person in authority is telling the rest of the class follow my example, and those troubled individuals will do just that.
It's hard teaching nowadays because a lot of children do not have proper examples of moral conduct from the home. And many of those teachers either lose it because they've had their own issues lurking in the background or they've never had to deal with such behaviour or problems and don't know how. Then of course, there are those people who simply take out the frustration of their own problems out on their students.

Thanks for the great answer. I agree with many of your points. Teachers are the first bullies and then other children follow their example. Also many teachers work long hours for low pay which can lead to burn out and loss of love for the job.
It is possible. There are students who are also bullies. I teach high school and deal with a lot of bullying. Friday I gave a student detention for talking. As the class left, she stayed behind. She didn't want me to call her mother because her mother would take her off a sports team. She turned around and looked me directly in the eyes. Six times I tried to close the door and she stuck her foot in the door, still staring me in the eys. I motioned for security to come over. She then left. When I called her home, the mother told me of at least four other instances of her getting in trouble that week.
There is an underlying cause for the girl getting into trouble and it begins in her family. Have you tried speaking privately with the girl to see if you can get through to her? It may be that her father has abandoned them, her mom works: neglect
Yes Diane children can intimidate teachers as well. We have children in our class that some teachers "leave be" because they hit and bite etc.. Teachers arent equipped to deal with it. But have they been bullied, neglected etc..
Hi Garifalia, I couldn't write a response under your comment. You betcha there are major problems at home. Mom's boyfriend is about 6 years old than the student (not the mom) and more drama.
Exactly, and the girl is taking out her frustration wherever she can. I'm sorry for her and for you not being able to do your work due to her behaviour. The mother needs to understand that the child is the mirror of what's going on at home.
Cruel teachers are bad, which is why we need to end teacher tenure that forces schools to play "dance of the lemons" instead of firing teachers who are bad for kids. Nor should they be put in "rubber rooms" and paid for doing nothing. This is an indignity to the parents overloaded by school taxes.
