There has been a lot of discussion as to whether Pluto is a planet or planetoid. It is my opinion that it qualifies as a planet. It has an atmosphere even if it is rather sparse. Just one pont, as there are moons belonging to the gas giants that can be considered to have atmospheres

Mercury is also a diminutive celestial body, no one refers to it as a 'planetoid'

There are eight classical planets. Pluto has now been classified as adwarf planet along with Ceres, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. A dwarf planet is a minor planet with enough mass to pull itself into a roughly spherical shape. There are also 73 dwarf planet candidates that may be listed as dwarf planets in the future if further observation shows that they fit this definition.

I agree with the IAU's determination of Pluto as a dwarf planet. I don't see it s a demotion, just a more accurate reclassification. Instead of being a strange outlier among the big planets, it is king of a new class of objects that astronomers are only beginning to understand.
