Could a modern society function without currency, and if so, how?
If there is no currency, we trade. A few people would be cheated, others make plenty because they were quick and everything. But it would not be pretty. Stealing would be easier too.
So it's currency or a bartering system, could you imagine anything else?
Killing and stealing are the only others I can think of. Bartering and trade have always existed so I expect them to remain.
The photo you have accompanied this question with apparently suggests that the future may be quite bleak. If that is the case and currency that is used worldwide now, of course would be useless, and the barter system would then fall in place. This would be established as trading needs for needs. Later after more recuperation, a form of currency might be re-established and there would be business carried on in a shell of its former self. Thanks for your intriguing question, my friend. whonu
The picture was not intended to portray a bleak future, but rather to instill the idea of being stripped to the bone. How would we respond? Are there other options besides currency and bartering? Perhaps technology will ignite an entirely new system.
