Which African-American/Black texts do you use in your English or History classroom?
I'm in the process of diversifying the English language arts curriculum and would like to know which pieces of African-American/Black literature have found places in teachers' lessons. I'm especially interested in the pairing of AA/Black texts with the traditional canonical texts.
I'm not a teacher, but I remember that we studied "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Dr Maya Angelou in our English classes during school. We don't get taught American history in British schools as part of the curriculum, so it was a great way to learn about the issues faced by African-Americans.
