The Roman society and institutions that had existed in western Europe were replaced by an illiterate warrior culture. There was a complete collapse of trade, which meant the cities emptied and the society became rural. Economics shifted from commerce to a more-primitive agrarian system. There remained literacy and education in the Christian monasteries. But these were exceptions and had little bearing on the prevailing ruling class for the first few centuries.
