Most people don't remember the bad about the past, and so have the romantic view of it. You see this with the romantic view of the farm life, when billions literally left the farm to work in factories because that was BETTER than farm life. I remember a Slate author who said life in the Apple factories in China was the second worst thing he'd seen in that nation. Life on the farm was worse. At least in the factory, you had one day off a week, regular pay at higher than farm wages, air conditioning in the summer, the opportunity to advance through training and training.
