Why is the United States of America SO OBSESSED with........RELIGION?

It seems that religion permeates many aspects of American culture & society, even to the election of political candidates.  Out of the industrialized nations, America is the most religious w/71% of Americans being religiously affiliated.  Religion is a VERY IMPORTANT aspect of American life e.g. there has been no non-religious affiliated, atheists, or agnostic political official elected.  Religion is the BE & END-ALL of America.

America's romantic and nostalgic views leave them wanting magic...ergo, religiousity.
The sad remnant of religion that America holds on to needs to be released, but it may take another hundred years. It is simply an idyllic dream that magic occurs and the majority in America seem to cling to the hope of a god. So sad.

    1. Many of the founders of the country were fleeing religious persecution in Europe, so they were the most religious. This is true from Puritans to Anabaptists (became Amish and Mennonite). So there was a bias at the founding toward more religious populations.
    2.  The religious diversity, competition between religious groups, led to revivals, debates - if you didn't engage the population, you lost out to other denominations, so they kept it interesting, changed, evolved. In contrast, many nations in Europe had official religions, like Sweden's official Lutheran church or Church of England. When you had official state backing, you became complacent and membership slowly dropped.
