         Being an example -- by  living the way you would want them to.

    Everything else  falls under that. No matter what you tell them, they compare what you say to what you do:

    Telling the truth, being consistent, being fair, firm, generous, loving, kind, patient.

    I feel that love, patience, safety, and understanding are at the top of the list. I feel these four things help to raise a self assured and independent adult while giving the child a comfortable habitat to grow into said adult.

    * Stable loving married family throughout their childhood
    * Meeting their physical needs and not indulging in all their emotional whims
    * Sharing the advice you wish you'd learned instead of trying to give them all the material goods you wish you'd had (quote from Stephen Molynaux)
    * Teaching them eternal principles to live by instead of going off of the current ideological and social fads
